The Perfect Recipe to Recreate the Classic McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish

People looking to save money by not going to McDonald’s and spending a small fortune need to try their hand at this filet-o-fish recipe. It’s something that the whole family can help with and is bound to be a surefire hit with everyone, no matter what their age is. You can use any type of white fish such as cod or haddock. Just make sure to cut them thin and square to give the illusion of eating a McDonald’s filet-o-fish meal.

How to Make the Tartar Sauce

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup full-fat Mayonnaise
  • tbsp finely diced capers
  • 2 tbsp finely diced pickles
  • 1 heaped tbsp finely diced parsley
  • 2 tsp finely diced dill
  • juice of one lemon
  • sugar, salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

1. Use a small bowl and combine all the tartar sauce ingredients. Season it with salt and pepper to your liking.

2. Add a bit of sugar to balance out the acidity of the sauce.

3. When you like the taste, cover the bowl and leave it in the fridge to cool.

How to Make the Sandwich

Ingredients:

  • 4 4oz white fish fillets
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp white pepper
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 2 medium eggs
  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
  • 1 1/4 cups Panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/2 – 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 American cheese slices
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions:

1. Once you have cut the fish, sprinkle some salt on both sides and leave them to sit for a few minutes.

2. In the meantime, combine ¾ tablespoon of salt with the rest of the seasoning.

3. Arrange three shallow dishes. Fill one with eggs mixed with Dijon mustard, one with flour and half of the seasoning, and one with Panko combined with the rest of the seasoning.

4. Pat the fish dry.

5. Following the steps of flour, eggs, then breadcrumbs, dip each fish filet in the prepared bowls. Let the covered fish rest on the tray.

6. Heat up some oil in a cast-iron pan on medium-high.

7. Fry the fish on both sides, in two batches.

8. When it’s golden and crisp, lay the fish on a rack or paper towels to remove excess oil. All that’s left is to stack your sandwiches and enjoy!
